I am forever trying to figure out what the best way to keep herbs fresher for longer. Sometimes I feel like I am loosing the battle. Real Simple says to trim the ends of Basil, Parsley and Cilantro and place them in a glass of water, but herbs like Chives, Thyme and Rosemary need to be wrapped loosely in plastic wrap and placed in the warmest part of the refrigerator.
This works well for me and I just change the water every few days. I have several jars in my refridgerator all the time.
I have also seen gadgets such as this:
Cuisipro Compact Herb Keeper
Sold at Sur la Table described below:
"Suspended removable tray makes loading and removing herbs a snap. The tray has holes, so the water hydrates the herbs and drains when pulled up but won’t make a mess. Conveniently fits in refrigerator door."
These systems are both very similar and work the same way. All in all it does seem possible to lengthen the life of herbs purchased at a market or grocery store. Still, there is nothing better than growing your own.Happy Herbing!
